SteamQuake’s $3.99 sale has ended, but its new campaign remains
Dawn of the Machine is still a substantial free update for Quake owners; Steam has returned the classic FPS to $9.99.
Thirty years after Quake helped redefine the first-person shooter, MachineGames and id Software have returned with something much larger than a commemorative patch. Dawn of the Machine is a free new episode for Quake owners, built around 19 maps, looping worlds, altered enemies and new ways to turn the original arsenal loose.
A new campaign, not a small bonus room
Dawn of the Machine sends Ranger into a dimension caught in violent cycles. Time folds back on itself, and returning to familiar places can reveal changed routes, encounters and secrets. Runes open sealed paths, while persistent health and ammunition upgrades give the campaign a progression layer that feels new without slowing Quake’s essential speed.
MachineGames also added enemy variants—including Rocket Ogres, Demo Dogs and Blood Shamblers—along with weapons such as a lightning-charged Super Axe and a ricocheting Laser Cannon. A new soundtrack, episode hub, hidden secrets, deathmatch map and three achievements round out an update that sounds closer to a full expansion than an anniversary extra.
Why Quake still matters
The original Quake fused id Software’s speed and precision with a darker world of medieval stone, industrial machinery and creatures that seemed pulled from a nightmare. Its true 3D spaces changed how shooters were designed, played and modified. Decades of custom maps followed, and modern retro shooters still borrow its movement, atmosphere and compact combat arenas.
The enhanced edition already includes improved resolution support, restored music, crossplay, cooperative play and curated add-ons. Dawn of the Machine joins Dimension of the Past and Dimension of the Machine as another reason the modern release has become the easiest way to experience the classic.

This is not a preorder or a promise for later. The free update is available now on Steam, the Microsoft Store, Game Pass, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch versions of Quake. The $3.99 Steam sale makes the timing especially good for PC players who somehow missed it the first time—or the many times since.
